Every life takes unexpected turns. How we navigate those turns is part of our journey. Hawthorn graduate Tami Chu (MSHN 2016) tells the story of how she went from first grade teacher to nutritionist and then to the publisher of a nationally acclaimed magazine because of many unexpected turns.
Join us as we welcome Tami Chu, MS, MA for her All About Alumni presentation The Uncommon Path – Finding Purpose in Life and Business.
Before pursuing her MS degree in holistic nutrition at Hawthorn University (graduating in January 2016), Tami Chu was a special education teacher with a MA degree in Deaf Education. She left teaching to raise and home school her four children who, along with her flock of backyard chickens, kept her pretty busy. She spent a few years as a chapter leader for the Weston A. Price Foundation, promoting healthful living in her community. At the same time, she ran a local food buyer’s club to encourage discounted purchases of organic products and taught nutrition classes in the local community. Her journey into real food and holistic wellness began in childhood with homemade everything, (thanks Mom!) and a focus on natural products. The path was solidified when her fourth child, a twin, was born with multiple allergies that had him covered in rashes from 3 weeks old. When doctors couldn’t provide answers Tami went searching on her own and hasn’t stopped since. Recently, Tami and her husband acquired ownership of the flagship Edible magazine, Edible Ojai & Ventura County. Now as a publisher and editor, she uses her education to inform story choices and pick recipes to share through her publication.
