Hawthorn University is accredited by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission. The Accrediting Commission is listed by the U.S. Department of Education as a nationally recognized accrediting agency and is a recognized member of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
The Accrediting Commission is a charter member of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), the leading non-governmental recognition for accrediting associations. A national advocate and institutional voice for self-regulation of academic quality through accreditation, CHEA is an association of 3,000 degree-granting colleges and universities and recognizes 60 institutional and programmatic accrediting organizations.

Hawthorn University has been approved to operate programs in holistic nutrition from the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE) since 2002. Approval to operate means that Hawthorn meets state standards. This does not imply that Hawthorn University or its educational programs are endorsed or recommended by the state or by the bureau only that Hawthorn University has met the minimum state standards.
On September 7, 2016, the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education renewed Hawthorn University’s (Institution Code: 48441699) approval to operate for 5 years. Any questions a student may have regarding the approval of the BPPE that have not been satisfactorily answered by the institution may be directed to the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (see contact info to the left).
Our educational programs have been reviewed and approved as meeting the National Association of Nutritional Professional‘s (NANP) educational standards. Graduates of the DSC, MSHN, MHNE, and NC programs are eligible to sit for the board certification exam in holistic nutrition from the Holistic Nutrition Credentialing Board (HNCB). Graduates of the MSTN program are qualified to sit for the NANP board certification exam if they complete two additional courses; MHNE 611 and HRB 1.
International Organization of Nutritional Consultants
The International Organization of Nutritional Consultants (IONC) has credited our programs with distinction. The Master of Science in Holistic Nutrition and the Doctorate of Science in Holistic Nutrition programs are approved at the Registered Orthomolecular Health Practitioner (ROHP) designation and the Masters of Science in Health and Nutrition Education and the Nutrition Consultant programs at the Registered Nutritional Consultant Practitioner (RNCP) level.
